The Ontario Provincial Police were out in full force across the province over the Canada Day long weekend. They took specific care to reduce speeding and reckless driving. Even one fatal car accident is one too many, and sadly, a number of lives were lost in crashes during this year's celebrations.

According to information provided by the OPP, collisions on Ontario roads claimed the lives of five people. Two motorcycle riders were killed in two separate crashes, and authorities say they suspect one of those resulted from excessive speeding. Accidents on OPP-patrolled roads have resulted in 113 deaths so far this year.

Police say speed and reckless driving are to blame, with 31 of the deaths this year linked to recklessness. The OPP action over the Canada Day long weekend resulted in more than 5,800 charges for speeding. Contrary to recent years, there apparently were no fatalities among boaters and those involved in off-road activities.

A significant number of road accidents involve motorcycles. Law enforcement authorities noted that many bikers lose their lives in crashes that are caused by the negligence of other parties, rather than the carelessness of motorcyclists. Families who have lost loved ones in a motorcycle or car accident may have the right to pursue claims for financial relief to assist with the expenses related to end-of-life arrangements and other economic losses. An experienced personal injury lawyer can also help surviving family members to seek recovery of emotional damages, based upon evidence of negligence by another party to a fatal accident.
