As every commuter in Ontario's cities knows, the roads and highways are frequently packed with cars and trucks. The greater the traffic volume, the greater the risk of an accident becomes. While most drivers try hard to operate their vehicles in a safe manner, there are those who disregard the safety of others, including professional truck operators. A recent safety operation on the province's highways uncovered a disturbing number of unsafe commercial trucks, all with the potential to cause a serious injury to others in an accident.

On April 26 and 27, officers from seven municipal police forces and the Ontario Provincial Police participated in a commercial vehicle safety blitz in partnership with the provincial government. The officers conducted inspections of commercial vehicles, looking for mechanical issues and safety violations. The results were not good.

The participating officers surveyed 331 commercial vehicles during the operation, and had to remove 111 from the road for various infractions. Officers issued 254 provincial offense notices for a variety of violations, including improper braking systems, improper tires and insecure loads, as well as for documentation offenses. According to a police statement, it is the responsibility of each commercial driver to ensure his or her vehicle and load are safe before heading out on the road.

Driving on the streets of Ontario can be hazardous enough without operators compounding the problem with unsafe vehicles. No cost-cutting or time-saving measures are worth the risk of a serious injury to one's fellow motorists. Anyone hurt in an accident with a commercial vehicle should consider contacting a personal injury lawyer to discuss the case.
