There is no greater modern convenience than the automobile. Unfortunately, that same convenience can turn into a deadly weapon if the vehicle is not used carefully. A single negligent driver can change the lives of many people in an instant. That was the case recently when a terrible accident on the busiest highway in Ontario claimed four lives and left two others injured.
The multi-vehicle accident happened on May 11 on the 401 east of Kingston. Seven vehicles, including one small commercial truck, two passenger vehicles and four tractor-trailers were involved in a pileup during the early morning. One of the passenger vehicles caught fire after it was struck.
The four occupants of the flaming car all perished in the wreck. Both occupants of the small truck suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. Ontario Provincial Police officers arrested one of the tractor-trailer drivers and charged him with two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm and four counts of dangerous driving causing death. The 37-year-old driver is out on bail while awaiting a June court appearance, though a judge ordered him not to apply for a passport or other travel documents during the interim.
For the injured parties, and for the families of the deceased, life will never be the same. A serious accident can leave victims with emotional and physical damage that may not easily heal. Though money cannot undo a tragedy, it can ease the financial suffering that often follows a major collision. Any man or woman who has suffered because of a negligent driver has a right to discuss his or her options with a personal injury lawyer.
