There's no question about it: Human beings have fragile bodies that are easily harmed in car crashes. This is why our vehicles are equipped with so many safety features. Indeed, the safety features on cars -- which reduce the threat of injury and death in car crashes - are arguably more important to vehicle drivers than the engines, wheels, and comfort of vehicles.

It's no longer necessary to imagine what such a man might look like. Several Australians recently teamed up to design the "car accident-proof" human and they created a life-sized and realistic model of the imaginary individual. Some of the most important "safety features" possessed by this human - named Graham - include:

-- Leg joints that bend in all kinds of directions to prevent broken legs

-- An additional leg joint made to help Graham

-- No nose in order to prevent a broken nose

-- An extra thick cranium

-- More fat in the face to buffer impacts

-- Miniature airbags on the ribcage to prevent broken ribs

-- Tougher, thicker and more durable skin

Graham was created for the purpose of informing drivers about the natural vulnerability of humans, in order to show how easy it is for us to get hurt and/or killed in car crashes. In turn, this awareness should encourage motorists to take additional care to follow traffic laws and be more attentive on the roadway. Considering the fact that well over 1 million people lose their lives to vehicle-related incidents each year across the globe, any effort drivers make to be safer is certainly an improvement.

New technologies are emerging - like self-driving cars - in order to reduce the threat of car crashes and related deaths and injuries, but we are a long way away from making car crashes a thing of the past. Each year, thousands of individuals across Ontario will die in an automobile-related accident. In situations where these deaths were the direct result of another party's negligence, family members of the deceased will have the right to seek wrongful death claims for financial restitution in civil court.
