Unfortunately, most Ontario car accidents come out of nowhere and provide no warning. When accidents like this happen, it is understandable to feel confused as well as frightened. However, it is very important that you take certain steps in the aftermath of your accident, both to protect your health and well-being and to protect your best interests.

Some steps to take after an accident are fairly obvious: assess whether you are injured; check on any other people involved in the collision; call for medical help if it is necessary; and contact the police. Other steps to take are less obvious but no less important. They include:

-- Take photographs of the accident scene as soon as possible and remember to include pictures of any damage your car may have sustained in the accident.

-- Speak with any people who may have witnessed the accident and record what they may have seen. If possible take down the witness names and contact information.

-- Exchange names, addresses and contact information with the other driver or drivers involved with the accident. Try to record their license plate numbers as well.

-- Contact your auto insurance provider as early as possible.

It is also a great idea to think about whether or not you may need a lawyer to represent you following the accident. This is particularly important if you have suffered injuries due to the collision and if you believe the accident occurred because of another driver's negligence.

Remember, protecting yourself includes seeking accident benefits for any injuries you may have received as a result of your car accident. In many cases, victims need assistance covering medical treatment after the accident and the law offers a solid path to recovery.
