Warmer spring weather is on the horizon and it will be here before you know it. This is great news for Ontario residents, particularly those who enjoy riding motorcycles. After a winter of operating only cars or trucks, do not forget to refresh your memory about how to reduce your risk of becoming involved in a motorcycle accident. Even in warm weather on clear, dry roads, you have to remain vigilant at all times on the back of a motorcycle.

It is a fair bet that driving safely is a top priority for most cyclists in Canada. Here are a few ways you can protect yourself, your motorcycle and motorists who share the nation's roads:

-- Consider enrolling in professional motorcycle rider training. Whether you need a refresher or are new to motorcycles, you will benefit from expanding your knowledge.

-- Always wear your helmet. Approved and properly used headgear can protect you from serious head injuries should an accident occur.

-- Practice safety at all times. This means using the proper signals so that other motorists are aware of you and your motorcycle. You should also keep your motorcycle a safe distance away from other vehicles.

-- Stay alert at all times and keep your body hydrated. Maintaining a balanced mental and physical state can protect you in a crisis situation.

-- Wear gear and clothing that is easily visible to other drivers. Make sure your head and tail lights are in good working condition.

If, despite your vigilance, you do become injured in a motorcycle accident, it may benefit you to seek advice from a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. You may be entitled to receive accident and disability benefits.
