After a car accident: How to get your benefits

The aftermath of a car accident can be a chaotic time. If you were seriously injured, you will probably be in the midst of getting any required medical treatment. You may also be experiencing some emotional trauma as well. During the chaos, it can be difficult to focus on any procedural tasks you must address, but it is a crucial part of getting the benefits you are due.

First, you will need to contact your insurance provider to initiate your claim. A claims adjuster will speak with you about the details of the accident and then the company will determine fault. If you incurred any injuries due to the car accident, you will likely be eligible to receive benefits under the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule.

These benefits include:

-- Payment of medical expenses

-- Replacement of lost income

-- Payment of caregiver services

-- Payment of rehabilitation services

-- Payment of attendant care services

-- Non-earner benefits (if you cannot return to work and do not qualify for other services)

-- You can also be compensated for additional expenses related to your car accident injuries

To receive these benefits, you must complete several forms such as an application, a confirmation of treatment, a confirmation of income, a disability certificate and a standard consent to disclose your medical information.

Completing these tasks can feel like a monumental burden to those suffering from the emotional and physical aftermath of a car accident. Often a close family member or friend can assist you, but many accident victims prefer to work with an Ontario personal injury attorney to ensure accurate completion of the benefits process.
